I Via Crucis del Pueblo in Adeje: A Unique Religious and Cultural Event

March 2023, the municipality of Adeje in Tenerife will host the first edition of the I Crucis del Pueblo event.

The main goal of the event is to showcase the local cultural and religious heritage, as well as promote tourism and interaction between residents and visitors. The event will take place from March 13th to March 17th, starting at 7:00 p.m., and will cover the five parishes of Adeje, located in Tijoco-La Hoya, Armeñime, Los Olivos, Fañabé, and the historic centre of Adeje.

On March 13th, the procession of the Nazarene of Forgiveness will start from Tijoco Bajo and will stop at three stations, symbolizing the first three stations of the Via Crucis. The procession will end at the Parish of La Milagrosa in Tijoco La Hoya, followed by a performance by the Folklore Group Imoque and a gathering in the square, where traditional Lenten food will be served.

On March 14th, the procession will move to the Armeñime neighbourhood, starting from the school area and reaching the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord. As in Tijoco-La Hoya, three stations will be set up along the way, followed by a gathering in the square.

On March 15th, the procession of the Nazarene of Forgiveness will arrive at Los Olivos. Starting from the roundabout of the Neighbours' Association, the procession will stop at three stations and will end at the Church of San José, where a gathering will be held in the square.

On March 16th, the procession will be in Fañabé, starting from the roundabout of the football field and reaching the Parish of Our Lady of the Field. The procession will stop at the next three stations of the Via Crucis, followed by a gathering in the square.

On March 17th, the procession will return to the main church, arriving at the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano. The San Juan de La Orotava Band will accompany the procession with the Nazarene carried on their shoulders.

On Saturday, the official start of Holy Week will take place at 7:00 p.m. with the reading of the proclamation at the Adeje Convent. José Antonio López Delgado, who has played the role of Jesus Christ in La Pasión de Adeje for the last 15 years, and Miguel Ángel Navarro Mederos, diocesan delegate for historical heritage and parish priest of San Francisco de Asís in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will be in charge of the reading.

During the event, the Patronato Musical de la Villa de Adeje Band, directed by Víctor Herrera González, will perform. In addition, the processional march "No lloréis por mí" composed by Jesús Agomar González Guillama specifically for the Holy Week of Adeje, will be premiered.
